Vietnam by bicycle: A journey of fitness, cultural experience and remembrance

Eighteen months ago, I decided I needed to take drastic measures to regain the fitness I knew as a younger man. I’d reached my mid-60s, and the slings and arrows of life and career had added many pounds.

I began to go to a trainer twice a week and quickly learned more about the muscles and balance I had neglected. Maintaining strength and balance is vital as we age. It helps prevent falls and allows us to enjoy life fully.

I also started riding a road bicycle long distances. I was a commuter bicyclist for years but found that a 30-mile ride on skinny tires was more challenging – the hills one didn’t think about in a car were long and arduous by bike.

Now, 30 pounds lighter and much more fit, I’ve decided to embark on a bicycle tour of Vietnam. I want to experience the country’s culture close up, while remembering old friends lost to the Vietnam War.

Any of us, at any age can lose weight and become fit again. To maintain good health and enjoy life fully, the journey is worth the hard work.

I am traveling with a group of cyclists, many of which are members of the Cascade Bike Club based in Seattle. We will be biking with Pedaltours of Vietnam.

We leave for Hanoi today, Nov. 13. We will visit Halong Bay, then return to Hanoi. From there we will make our way south, before flying to Siem Reap, Cambodia, for a few days. We will then return to Saigon, before heading home on Nov. 29.

Look for upcoming blog posts that highlight and recount my journey.
