160322YogaSeries-325When I heard that Oak Street Medical was starting a new six-week yoga class, my first though was, “What a great idea for a medical facility to integrate the body and mind!”

The teachers of the class, Patty Nadel, MSW, LCSW and Michele Bulgatz, MS, 500RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher), created the program for women in recovery. They believe that women who are healing from trauma, who may have PTSD or high anxiety, can benefit greatly from yoga.


151020Bipolar-300During my life, I've watched loved ones struggle with various mental health issues. As a nurse working with patients from all walks of life, my eyes have been opened to the reality that many seemingly "normal" - however you describe "normal" - people cope with mental illness on a daily basis and still maintain a job, family, and/or school.

Mental health is a topic many people avoid, even though we all know people who've dealt with mental health challenges or instabilities. We are used to hearing the word "depression," but there are other common mental health conditions that people cope with every day, such as bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression.

Dementia is a loss of brain function that occurs with certain diseases. Although there are many potential causes of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type. When we age and become forgetful, it is common to wonder what is normal and what is not. There are early and progressive symptoms that can indicate the potential onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

How many people have Alzheimer’s disease, and when does it begin?
It is estimated that 5.4 million Americans had Alzheimer’s disease in 2012. This includes 5.2 million people older than 65 and 200,000 people younger than 65. The likelihood of having Alzheimer’s disease increases with age. One in eight individuals older than 65, or 13 percent, has Alzheimer’s disease. And nearly half of people older than 85, or 45 percent, have Alzheimer’s disease. Because women in the United States generally live longer than men, women are more likely to develop this form of dementia.

As we age, it is not uncommon for people to experience memory lapses that may get more frequent and frustrating. Understanding different types of memory loss and normal memory loss that comes with aging may reduce any anxiety or frustration you may have.

What are normal memory changes as we age?
Thinking, also known as cognitive function, changes with age. Though there is variability across people, let’s explore the general trends.

Much on-going research is dedicated to uncovering ways to identify stress within our bodies and how to decrease or even temporarily eliminate it. To do so limits the potential risk of compromised physical, emotional and spiritual health.
